| T.W.Thomas
is a family owned and run business, established in 1864 as a builders
merchant. The company has concentrated on the design, sale and
installation of quality bathrooms in Swansea and the surrounding areas for
the past twenty years. To keep pace with their success, the company needed
to provide a larger showroom area, and in 1994 they relocated to Swansea
Enterprise Park.
While providing the extra space
they required, this modern metal construction building suffered from
excesses of temperature. The building skin, although insulated, allowed
significant heat gain during the summer months and heat loss during the
winter. An innovative solution to this problem was sought, and the Company
turned to RACS to use their proven expertise.
The requirement was not only to
provide summer cooling and winter heating, but a solution which would
blend in with the existing building, and could be installed with no
disruption of the retail activity.

T.W.Thomas could not afford to
close their showroom, as this provided their only window to the public, so
any work needed within the showroom area could only be carried out 'out of
hours'. Installing the galvanised steel ducting, chosen to blend in with
the metal covering of the roof and internal walls, not only presented
logistical problems in having to work at height, but also involved
erecting and dismantling the scaffolding used every time work was carried
out.

Normally a heat pump installation
would have an externally mounted unit at ground level. There were worries
about the possibility of vandalism to a unit sited in this way, so an
internally positioned unit was specified. This is a Carrier heat pump with
cooling and heating capacities of around 70kW.
The whole system was installed and commissioned with no interruption to
trading, and within the time scale specified in the original order.
"RACS enabled us to
continue trading while they installed the complete system. Not only am I
happy with the performance of the equipment which has been installed, but
the service which RACS gave me was superb."

Providing a heat pump, the air
handling equipment, and the ducting necessary to ensure sufficient air
flow throughout the building did not present RACS with a problem, the
conditions imposed upon the installation did.
