CONCERT HALL AIR CONDITIONING
NEATH WORKING MENS CLUB
|
| Situated
in the centre of the town of Neath, Neath Working Men's Club has been in
existence for well over 100 years. Originally formed in 1873 as a
Gentlemen's Club, the redevelopment of Neath town centre forced a move to
new premises in 1969.
Since that time, the popularity
of the club, now boasting some 4000 members, has provided the impetus for
a number of extensions to the premises. The club now has a fine
concert hall on the first floor, with a lounge and other public rooms on
the ground floor.
The concert hall, which is used
for a multitude of different activities, will seat 300 for a concert, or
200 for a dinner, with in excess of 350 being catered for on dance nights.
The comfortable lounge bar and the games room, with it's two snooker
tables and pool table are situated on the northern side of the building.

SKYAIR electric heat pump units were installed in total, with 6 serving
the concert hall and two each the lounge and games room. Each of the heat
pump has its own high level vent set in the ceiling, which allows the air
flow in all areas of the rooms to be controlled. The heat pumps provide
heat in the winter, and cool air in the summer. |
|
 |
| The
large roof area above the concert hall, although insulated, allows heat
gain during the summer months and heat loss in the winter, providing a
need for both heating and cooling within the room. In addition, the
existing heating system, using radiators, was struggling to provide
sufficient heat during the middle of winter. When RACS were asked to
consider this problem, heat pumps provided the ideal solution. The ideal
solution not only for the concert hall, but for the lounge and games room
on the ground floor, where, due to it's northern exposure, similar
problems occurred.

The pitched preformed metal roof
covering precluded the normal roof mounting for the units, so wall fixings
were used, and suitable space was found on the side and rear walls of the
building.
The 6 units feeding the concert
hall satisfy the cooling demands of even the hottest summer, and have
obviated the need for the wet heating system. In addition, the time
taken to reach equitable temperatures has been significantly reduced. The
two units in the lounge provide 20kW of cooling and 23kW of heating while
those feeding the games room provide 10kW of cooling and 13kW of heating.
These sizings have been found to provide the correct levels of both
heating and cooling within the building.
"I am very pleased with
the performance both of the units and of RACS. We have noticed much
improved conditions in all three of the rooms since the
installation."
