3. SCHOOL CATERING
CWM TAWE COMPREHENSIVE

Cwm Tawe Comprehensive School

From this facility, the staff provide breakfasts in the morning break, between 11.10 and 11.25, with a wide range of snacks from toasted cheese to burgers and bacon butties.

Cwmtawe Comprehensive School is a modern building, provided in 1996 to replace three existing school buildings in Pontardawe. Situated to the South of the town, next to the river, the school has a population of about 1000 pupils and 60 teaching staff, providing secondary education for 11-16 year olds from Pontardawe and the upper Swansea valley.

The amalgamation of three premises into a single new building provided the Local Authority with an opportunity to greatly improve the catering facilities, and provide a more flexible kitchen layout. In responding to the Local Education Authority tender, RACS provided the most cost effective, value for money, installation and were awarded the contract.

As in many tendered contracts, not everything went according to plan. But RACS adjusted to the alterations forced on them, and completed the installation on time, ensuring that the superb catering facilities match the other facilities of the school.

The kitchen contains two combination ovens, two ranges, two deep fat fryers and a grill for cooking, along with walk in freezers and refrigeration, food preparation equipment and a long run of display and servery equipment. The servery, with its four door layout, provides flexibility, being used as one long counter, or two shorter ones depending upon the requirements.

At lunch time, some 500 meals are served within an hour, with a wide choice of both hot and cold food being available. The flexibility of the kitchen layout and the serving facilities allows a fast throughput of customers at all times.

As well as providing a wider choice of food options, the school is finding more interest from the pupils in pursuing catering careers. While not being used for teaching within the curriculum, a number of pupils have already indicated an interest in taking catering NVQs.

Cwm Tawe Comprehensive Kitchen

"I'm more than pleased with the catering facilities installed in the school by RACS. As well as providing better kitchens than we had in the old buildings, we are now able to serve a wider choice of food options, resulting in a higher uptake of school meals"
