CATERING FOR THE COMMUNITY
THE BELL CENTRE - BLAENLLECHAU
|
| Clinging
to the hillside, high above a bend in the Afon Rhondda Fach, the Bell
Centre stands as a testament to the tenacity of the people of Blaenllechau.
Recognising the problems facing this valley community after the closure of
the coal mines, with high unemployment, low rates of economic activity,
poor educational opportunities and facilities, the villagers decided to do
something about it. The Blaenllechau Community Enterprise Group worked
tirelessly to raise the money needed to provide a focus for the community.
Most of the cost of the Bell Centre was raised from grants, both from
within Wales and from Europe, with the residents contributing through fund
raising activities. |

The
catering facility is in use all day, providing all day breakfasts, around
30 lunches at midday and then being used by the local children after
school for both hot and cold food. In the evenings, the restaurant
facility ensures that full use is made of the centre opening hours. The
design of the building provided a space for the kitchen and the cafe,
which were deemed to be suitable for the numerical size of the expected
clientele.
RACS were asked to provide a
working kitchen within that space, bearing in mind the wide range of meal
preparation which was to take place. The final design includes a
combination oven, deep fat fryer, 4 burner hob, salamander and baine marie,
together with a fridge freezer and bottle cooler. As well as these major
items, RACS provided a microwave, hot water boiler, coffee brewer, dish
washer, sink and purpose built work surfaces together with all racking and
the serving counter. Within the limited space available, a fully
functioning catering facility has been installed, with all ergonometric
considerations being taken into account.

The Bell Centre provides a wide
range of facilities for the residents of Blaenllechau, being designed with
that end in mind. A recreation hall, conference rooms, some with IT
equipment, a nursery in the basement, offices and a cafe and restaurant
facility. The compact kitchen area provides enough equipment and
preparation space to allow a wide range of catering activities to take
place within the building. A small cafe area adjoins the kitchen, and for
larger functions, or when acting as a restaurant, an adjoining room is
brought into use. In deference to its South facing aspect, the cafe has
been named 'Sunnyside'.
