FAMILY FUN AT THE SEA SIDE
MUMBLES PIER
|
 |
Within
the kitchen area, the new equipment supplied includes an electric
combination oven, gas 6 burner range, deep fat fryer, chiller, freezer,
dish washer, purpose built cold room and purpose made servery counter as
well as extract canopy, benches, racks and sinks. All floors, walls and
ceilings were clad in the very latest materials, providing a sealed and
easy to clean, hygienic environment in which to prepare food.
The ice cream soda bar provided a different challenge in design. It
required point of sale ice cream scoop displays and upright refrigerated
cabinets for the cold drinks, facing into the eating area, while also
needing access to the external service window, so that staff could serve
customers both inside and outside the building.

Mumbles
Pier, built some 100 years ago, used to provide the embarkation point for
paddle steamers plying the South Wales and North Devon coasts. Now more of
a tourist attraction, the pier extends from Mumbles Head, guarding the
West End of Swansea Bay,
To complement the Grade II listed Pier, a new facility, built in the
Victorian style, has been erected on the sea front at the entrance. The
Pavilion provides the entertainment that would have been the highlight of
visits to the Pier in days gone by. The amusement arcade has been brought
up to date, with state of the art machines, and a 4 lane 10-pin bowling
alley.
But the real treats for visitors and their children have not been
forgotten, with fish and chips, an ice cream soda bar, and a fully fitted
restaurant, all combining to ensure that the facility caters for every
taste, and that the 'day at the seaside' remains a real treat.
The ice cream bar and fish and chip shop both have external service
points, while the 60 seater restaurant has a self service counter with
both hot and cold food displays.
RACS designed, installed and commissioned all of the catering areas,
including the food storage and preparation. Working within tight space and
time guidelines, RACS provided a facility which enables the minimum number
of staff to provide service from all outlets at maximum productivity.
The servery counter in the restaurant has been fabricated from granite, to
complement the rocky outcrop of Mumbles Head. This presented it's own
problems in terms of the weight which needed to be supported, and the
machining and jointing of the material into one continuous surface.

A very tight installation timescale was adhered to, and the Grand opening
of The Pavilion took place on time, with all facilities in full working
order.

“I
was impressed by the professionalism and the excellent service given by
RACS. They incorporated all of our requests into their designs and their
speed of response to late amendments, and to solving problems not of their
making, was very impressive. The catering installation we now have at
Mumbles Pier provides all of the facilities we could ask for."
