CATERING SERVICES FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE
CABLE AND WIRELESS CALL CENTRE
|
With
the increases in telephone and Internet usage, Cable & Wireless, one
of the major players in this market, had need to provide a central
'helpdesk' facility for all their users. In a large purpose built building
on Swansea Enterprise Park, state of the art equipment is manned by up to
400 operators at any one time, and will be in operation 24 hours a day.
The large open plan aspects of the work area were mirrored in the space
provided for relaxation, the restaurant and canteen areas. With modern
equipment in the building, Cable & Wireless looked to RACS to provide
similar facilities for their employees refreshments areas. Open spaces,
pleasant seating and tables and above all modern catering equipment in the
kitchen and for the serveries.
With 1500 employees working round the clock in shift patterns, work breaks
form an important part of the attendance time. While these would be
staggered, great emphasis was placed on being able to cater for large
numbers of people at any one time. The restaurant and snack bar areas were
carefully planned from raw material receipt, through preparation, cooking
and serving to the collection and washing of used crockery. The motorised
dirty tray return conveyor being some 18 metres long, extendING from the
dining area into the washup room.
In addition to the tray return conveyor, associated tables and trolleys
and the dishwasher and waste disposal, RACS supplied and installed a wide
range of equipment, benches, racks and serveries.

In
the kitchen, as well as all benches, sinks, food preparation equipment,
and racking, RACS installed a combi oven, a convection oven, 6 burner
range, grill, 3 fryers, bratt pan, microwave and coldrooms, freezer and
refrigerator.

The
snack bar, a separate entity from the restaurant, has both hot and cold
food and beverage dispensing displays, while the restaurant itself has 2
purpose built servery areas, differentiating between main meals and salads
and beverages.
Working as one contractor of many in the total scheme of the buildings
construction, RACS met and overcame a number of problems, mainly
associated with having to rely on other contractors to complete work.
Notwithstanding finding trenches and holes dug where heavy machinery was
due to offload the equipment and lift it onto the first floor, and delays
in commissioning when power and gas was not available, RACS ensured that
all equipment was installed and working in time for the building to
welcome it's first Cable & Wireless personnel.
Tight timescales and
problems not of their own making did not deter RACS in any way. Their
application and standards of workmanship are superb and they have provided
a modern, efficient catering facility on time and within budget.
