TY LLEN - THE NATIONAL LITERATURE CENTRE FOR WALES
|
The
Ty Llen National Literature Centre for Wales, opened by the Prince of
Wales in Swansea's lavishly upgraded Old Guildhall, is the first of the
new National Literature Centres being set up throughout Britain. This is a
centre for international literature, as well as the rich heritage of Wales
itself, with two galleries for exhibitions, a library, gift shop, book
shop, a studio for plays and readings and full film and video facilities.
Included within the facilities of the new centre are a welcoming bar and a
150 cover restaurant, whose kitchens also have to cope with the catering
demands of conference bookings.
The kitchen is situated directly above a main gallery, where priceless
works of literature and other treasures are on display to the public. This
provided a special challenge, and a novel solution. The drainage from the
kitchen could not follow the normal route into the floor, so is pumped up
onto the roof of the building and then piped down the side to the waste
outlet. |

As this was a complete
installation, the wall and floor finishes were also provided by RACS. By
ensuring that all services were installed in flush conduits, a clear and
clean wall surface area has been provided, adding to the aesthetic value
of the installation.
The completed kitchen includes two combination ovens, 6 burner range,
grill and two deep fat fryers, a cold room, deep freeze room, hot
cupboards, refrigerated cupboards, dishwasher, waste disposal unit,
beverage equipment, benches, sinks, wall shelves, food preparation
equipment. Many of the items had to be purpose made for the installation,
and all in a time frame of only 6 weeks.
