SEASIDE SOCIAL CLUB
|
Port
Talbot in West Glamorgan boasts a modern purpose built club building
housing the Seaside Social and Labour Club. Formed in 1963 to satisfy the
needs of the local population for a focus to their social activities, the
club has gone from strength to strength. The club building, opened in 1965
houses all the facilities one could want, allowing this thriving
organisation to grow to its present size, where the membership exceeds two
and a half thousand.
The club building is open every day in the year, from 11.30 in the morning
until 11 at night, and provides a wide range of activities for the local
population, from where the club membership is predominantly drawn. The
multipurpose concert hall is large enough to cater for 450-500 people for
a concert, or around 350 for a dinner dance, also having a stage at one
end, and a large screen at the other for showing films. On the ground
floor is a comfortable lounge and other facilities. |

The resulting design proposed
that the air conditioning should be provided by electric heat pumps,
giving cooling during the summer and heating in the winter, together with
fan driven smoke extraction. These proposals were accepted not only for
the concert hall, but also the ground floor lounge. Having the flat roof
provided an ideal location for the heat pumps, with 6 DAIKEN SKYAIR units
providing a combined output of 66kW of cooling and 70kW of heating for the
concert hall, the lounge bar being fed from two units mounted on the back
wall of the building, with a capacity of 20kW of cooling and 22kW of
heating.
Each heat pump feeds its own separate ceiling mounted unit within the
building, directing the treated air downwards and outwards, providing full
circulation of the air throughout the room.

In line with most 60's built
buildings of this type, the club building has a flat roof. The common
problems of heat gain during the summer and heat loss in the winter gave
varying comfort levels in the first floor concert hall. When looking to
tackle this problem, the club also decided that the air quality within the
building left much to be desired, and RACS were asked to provide a
solution to both of these problems.

"The air quality has improved beyond belief. One of our lady members,
who has asthma, used to view a visit to the club with fear, but now looks
forward to her visits. RACS have provided a complete solution to our
problems."
